School of Computer Science Held the Fourth "01 Academic Salon" on Discussing Reconfigurable and Deformable Robot Technology

09.June

In order to further promote the cross-integration of different disciplines, enliven academic thoughts and stimulate innovative thinking, the School of Computer Science organized the fourth "01 Academic Salon" activity on the afternoon of June 8, attended by more than 20 teachers and presided over by Li Chunke, secretary of the Party Committee of the School. Dr. Li Shuguang (Harvard University Researcher/MIT Postdoctoral) was invited to attend this Salon and give a report on the theme of "Reconfigurable and Deformable Robot Technology".

In the report sharing session, first of all, Dr. Li Shuguang introduced the research progress in the field of robots and pointed out the current challenges and solutions. Then, he shared his latest research progress on designing and manufacturing of the first "particle robot", and introduced the innovation and unique advantages of the particle robot; based on the origami principle, exoskeletons that can deform automatically are designed and manufactured, so that micro robots can run, swim and even glide; a bionic muscle manipulator is designed to realize ultra-strong flexible capture with low cost. Finally, the future research direction is introduced. The relevant researches have been published on top international academic journals such as Nature and PNAS respectively, which has had an extensive academic influence.

Finally, in the discussion session, the participating teachers actively discussed and communicated with Dr. Li Shuguang in depth. The atmosphere at the Salon activity was very electric, they especially discussed deeply in the aspects of particle robots, flexible robots and the generation of original innovative ideas. In this salon activity, the participating teachers expressed that Dr. Li Shuguang's research contents provided a new way of thinking and inspired them to make some new attempts, and they got very much from this activity. The School will also continue to hold regular academic salon activities themed on original innovations.

Brief Introduction to the Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Li Shuguang is currently a researcher at Wyss Institute of Harvard University, and his co-mentor is Professor Robert Wood. He also works in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and his co-mentor is Professor Daniela Rus. Li Shuguang obtained his doctor's degree from the School of Astronautics of Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2013. While studying for a doctor's degree, he was sent to Cornell University in the United States for joint training and taught by Professor Hod Lipson. The current research interests of Li Shuguang mainly include modular robots, origami robots and soft robots. During his master's and doctor's studies, he won the National Robot Contest Championship (Dance Robot Group), IROS 2010 Novel Technology Paper Award for Amusement Culture and SMASIS 2009 For Bio-Inspired Smart Materials and Structures. In recent years, many of his research papers have been published in top journals and academic conferences such as Nature, PNAS, Science Robotics, ICRA and IROS. His relevant research results have received special reports and attention from hundreds of well-known media, magazines and websites around the world, including BBC, NPR, Xinhua News, The Associated Press, MIT News, MIT Technology Review, Discovery News, CNN, Science Friday, Popular Science, Scientific American, etc. On March 21, 2019, the research result "Particle Robot" of Li Shuguang was published in Nature and was selected as cover article for key reports.
