School of Computer Science (hereinafter referred to as SCS) at Northwestern Polytechnical University (hereinafter referred to as NPU) is a research-oriented school integrating teaching and scientific research. Established in 1958, SCS has one of the earliest computer science majors in Chinese universities.
SCS has successfully developed China’s first airborne computer, the first micro-program small general-purpose computer, the first large scale ASIC for aerospace applications, and the first engineering database management system. Also SCS won the National Scientific Conference Award and the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology.
SCS has two first-level disciplines of Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering, and Computer Application Technology is the first computer discipline in the western region and the only key computer discipline in the northwestern region. In the Ministry of Education's fourth round of discipline evaluations, SCS’s Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering disciplines were ranked at A- and B+ respectively. Computer Science discipline is listed in the top 1% of global ESI disciplines.
In the past five years, SCS has won 8 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards, built 6 national platforms and 10 provincial and ministerial science and technology innovation platforms. SCS has undertaken and completed a number of national key basic research and development projects, national natural science foundation key projects, national defense pre-research projects, national defense basic research projects and other national research projects. The discipline greatly values on collaborative innovation and civil-military integration, and has formed the characteristic and advantageous discipline directions of Intelligent Sensing and Microsystem Design, Human-Machine Integration Intelligent Computing, Massive Data Storage and Management, Intelligent Perception and Media Computing, Computer Measurement, Control and Simulation, Industrial Internet Security and Intelligent Decision-Making.
SCS now has five undergraduate majors, namely Computer Science and Technology, Internet of Things Engineering, Data Science and Big Data, E-Commerce Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. SCS faculty edited and published China's firstIntroduction to Artificial IntelligenceandDigital Image Processingtextbooks; built 3 provincial teaching teams and 6 national and provincial excellent courses such as “Operating System”, and won the National Teaching Achievement Award.
SCS has a strong team of over 120 academic staffs, among which there are 2 academicians of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 distinguished professors of the the Cheung Kung Scholars Program, 2 Leading Talents of the Ten Thousand Talent Program, 1 awardee of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 Chair Professors of the Cheung Kung Scholars Program, 2 awardees of the Innovative Youth Talents of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 3 awardees of the Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientists, 1 awardee of the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, and 1 Young Top-Notch Talent of the Ten Thousand Talent Program. Many staffs are talents recruited from Japan, Germany, France, Australia, Canada and Singapore, and most key staffs have oversea experiences of studying, training and researching.
Over the past six decades, oriented by the frontier of computer science and technology and the national demands, SCS is committed to cultivating talents with the characteristics of interdisciplinary, innovation, and leadership, and constructing a national leading and world famous high-level discipline, so as to become a base for high-level talents cultivation and innovative scientific research in its discipline to support national defense construction and regional economy and social development of “One belt, One Road” areas.
