Theme Education on "Remaining True to Our Original Aspiration and Keeping Our Mission Firmly in Mind" Held by School of Computer Science-- Presentation Session on Mr. Kang Jichang's Meritorious Deeds

On October 25, 2019, the School of Computer Science held the Theme Education on "Remaining True to Our Original Aspiration and Keeping Our Mission Firmly in Mind" -- Presentation Session on Mr. Kang Jichang's Meritorious Deeds Wang Jingwen, the Vice President Charging Technology of Platform Company and a Member of the School of Computer Science, Kang Qianwang, the Executive Director of Xi'an Qianguan Observation and Control Technology Co., Ltd. and the Alumnus of School of Computer Science; Xu Weixia, the Deputy Director of the Education Foundation of Northwestern Polytechnical University; professors Zhou Xingshe and Fan Xiaoya of School of Computer Science, Yu Zhiwen, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Computer Science, Xu Fangnuan, the Deputy Secretary of School of Computer Science, Gao Jun, the Deputy Dean of School of Computer Science and all staff and students representatives of School of Computer Science attended the session. The meeting was presided over by Gao Wu, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School.

In the speech, Yu Zhiwen mentioned that the connotation of the present theme education is "Remaining True to Our Original Aspiration, Undertaking the Mission, Finding out the Gap and Paying Close Attention to the Implementation". At the presentation session on Mr. Kang's meritorious deeds held today, the meritorious deeds of the older generation of academic leader were used to inspire everyone, hoping that everyone can learn from Mr. Kang and make contributions to the development of our motherland. Yu Zhiwen read out the brief biography of Mr. Kang Jichang, and said that the establishment of the Kang Jichang Education Foundation and the award of the grant reflected the concept of fostering character and civic virtue as well as taking students as the core, hoping that the spirit of the older generation of computer people represented by Mr. Kang would be passed on.

Inheriting the spirit of seeking truth and innovation, remaining true to our original aspiration and keeping our pace going

Professor Zhou Xingshe of School of Computer Science shared Mr. Kang's spirit of seeking truth and innovation. Mr. Kang pursued truth all his life, he is practical and realistic, and is perfectly open in all his actions. He pioneered airborne computers in our country; independently innovated the small computer system-622 computer; first studied the key components of avionics integration; supported the creation and development of micro-system direction; designed the special parallel processing system, which is applied widely; developed the parallel system of gene comparison. In the process of scientific research, he insists on the principles of not adulterating, not packaging, and not overstating, objectively evaluating his scientific research results. For the young teachers, Mr. Kang not only cared and supported them, but also was strict with them. Professor Zhou Xingshe said that seeking truth and innovation is the glorious tradition of computer people in Northwestern Polytechnical University; the older generation of computer people, represented by Mr. Kang, have a clear spirit of seeking truth and innovation; the outstanding alumni adhering to pragmatic innovation have achieved career success; the present generation of computer people have also inherited the spirit of seeking truth and innovation, making continuous development in the discipline. In this new era, he hoped that the younger generation will remain true to their original aspiration and carry forward the spirit of seeking truth and innovation. Only in this way can they go far and steady!


Setting an example for others with their own actual deeds, and striving to improve their own ethics

Professor Fan Xiaoya of School of Computer Science shared Mr. Kang's ethnic deeds. He shared the deeds of Mr. Kang from the aspects of remaining true to the original aspiration, pursuing the truth, charging at the head of his men, practicing the true knowledge, racking his brain, teaching untiringly, solidarity and cooperation, being willing to help others, studying for the lifelong working and never stopping working for external reasons. Born in the war years, Mr. Kang was determined not to be a conquered people. He once said, "My motherland has made me brave enough to shoulder the responsibilities." He has created a number of "China's first", making great contributions to the airborne military computers in China. He is strict with himself, dares to innovate, is kind to others and is willing to encourage and assist young people. He said, "I will continue to do scientific research as long as possible". After his retirement, he continued to innovate in scientific research, and even insisted on discussing scientific research with his colleagues when he was ill in hospital. Mr. Kang is a true patriot, a selfless devotee, a scientific researcher with strict thinking, a practitioner of practical innovation, a modern Confucian model, a courageous person who has never ceased to struggle for his life, as well as the ethnic model.

He silently did a lot for his students, and his kindness to his students will never be forgotten

Liu Junrui, an Associate Professor of School of Computer Science, recalled Mr. Kang's efforts as a supervisor in personnel training. Mr. Kang is not only a great scientist and a beloved model of teachers, but also a respectable revolutionary of the older generation. His love for his country is pure and selfless, and he never asks for anything in return. The spirit of patriotism, gratitude and devotion was deeply imprinted in his body and penetrated into his blood. His outlook on life and values also deeply affected every student of him, and he taught students to devote themselves to the great rejuvenation of the motherland.


At this presentation session, we further studied the selfless spirit of the older generation of computer people represented by Mr. Kang, such as seeking truth and innovation, persisting in learning, and contributing to our country, which inspired us to remain true to our original aspiration, keep our pace going, remember our mission, and make arduous efforts.

Brief introduction to Professor Kang Jichang


Kang Jichang, male, Han nationality, native of Nanhui County, Jiangsu Province, was born on March 14, 1930 in Shanghai. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in April 1949. He was the expert enjoying the State Council's special endowment and the retired veteran cadre enjoying the treatment of the department and bureau levels.

He has served successively as Lecturer and Associate Professor of Harbin Military Engineering College, Professor of Northwestern Polytechnical University, the First Dean of School of Computer Science, the Second and Third Trustee of Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Member of the First, Second and Third Academic Evaluation Group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. He has been engaged in the research of airborne computer for a long time. In the early 1960s, he took charge of and successfully developed China's first airborne computer, which was popularized and applied. After that, he took charge of the development of various types of electronic computers. He has published more than 150 papers in Chinese Journal of Computers, Journal of Software, Acta Automatica Sinica, Journal of Aeronautics, Journal of Computer Science and Technology, etc.

In 1989, he was rated as an excellent teacher in China. In 1974, he took charge of and successfully developed the "SSS-1 Type Digital Shooting and Targeting Computer", and the Aviation Product Shaping Committee of State Council identified that: "this computer is the first designed finalizing airborne fire control computer"; in 1978, "Data Processor of Aero Engine Test Bed" won the National Science Conference Award, and "Small Integrated Circuit Computer" won the National Science Conference Award; In 1990, "Red Flag No. 2-B Guidance Station" won the Third Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress. In 2000, "Parallel Multifunctional Single Board Intelligent Switch for ISDN" won the Third Prize of National Invention. "Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to China's Computer Industry in the Past 60 Years" was awarded to Kang Jichang by China Computer Federation.

On January 9, 2018, Kang Jichang died of illness at the age of 88.
